The pen should be soft. With it you must make neat strokes through the background, that one can see the gold and the colors separately; and then make with the black a little cross into the blue. the red, and the green, as it is shown here in the next circle; and then take a brush and take lead white, and make bars into the rose color, and draw them together, as here in the second circle.

Then take once more lead white and make rosettes with a brush into the blue, as it is shown in the next circle, and then also with the yellow rosettes into the red and green spaces, as is shown in the second circle.

This is the second checkered background. You shall outline it, paint and gild it, as it is shown here in these two circles. Then paint it with dark rose, as is shown here, diagonally every second row with a pen, and again diagonally with rose every other row, as is shown in the second circle hereafter; and always five shall remain empty.
